Yesterday, May 2nd was the original date for this year’s Kentucky Derby but the race has been moved to September due to coronavirus. The Derby’s postponement did not however stop Churchill Downs from holding a horse race yesterday – perhaps even the best horse race ever?
The “Kentucky Derby: Triple Crown Showdown” was a computer-generated virtual race pitting the past Kentucky Derby winners who went on to win the Triple Crown – 13 horses. The simulated race was created based on data algorithms and historical handicapping collected on each horse. The information was digested into a computer model that determined the probably results.
Betting was prohibited, instead people could select their preferred winner and make a donation to support COVID-19 relief for Team Kentucky Fund and Direct Relief. Churchill Downs hopes to raise $1 million in donations and will match every dollar up up to $2 million. Everyone who correctly picks the winner will be entered in a drawing to win a VIP experience at the 146th Kentucky Derby.
